Following its recent modernization, Madeira Airport inaugurated a new 1,800-m² shopping galleria on June 1, 2016. An upgrade to operational facilities has led to an optimized use of space, so passengers can be provided with a wider array of services.

€11 million of investment were required for the refurbishment and it is expected to drive up sales by nearly 30%.

The new layout of Madeira Airport is designed to handle several passenger streams at once as well as accommodating new stores for national and international brands. Once this shopping area is open for business, it will have the capacity to deal with up to 1,400 shoppers per hour.

The President of the Regional Government of Madeira attended the opening ceremony, in a gesture that attests to the airport’s success: passenger traffic hit a record 2.7 million in 2015 – a year-on-year increase of 6.3%.
